Picky eating disorder surely is not a deadly disease – but it’s nonetheless something that should be taken seriously. Not just because it can impact the life of the person who suffers from it in a very negative way, but also because it might lead to long-term health problems.

In the medical community, this condition is also known as selective eating disorder, and people often refer to it as fussy eating. It’s all the same. Basically, there are a lot of things that you do not eat, and only very few things that you do eat. Most things that other people eat with pleasure are things that you would never put into your mouth. Not just because you don’t like them, but because you can’t – you’d really have to force yourself to do it if you wanted to, and even then it’s questionable whether it would work out or not.

Oftentimes, whether you are able to eat a certain food depends on the texture or flavor of the food, sometimes it might be the color. In extreme cases, people who suffer from picky eating disorder are only able to eat foods from certain brands.

Every human being passes through a picky eating phase at some point in their life. However, for most people, this phase ends in early childhood and is not that extreme. What we can take away from that is that picky eating is just an escalation of a common and normal psychological phenomena.

There are different therapy approaches for selective eating disorder. Psychiatrists most often use cognitive behavior therapy. Exposure therapy is also often used. If a person only eats white toast with cheese, then you can add butter to it. Or a bit of cilantro. Something that is just a little bit outside of the picky eaters comfort zone, but not to the point where it’s repulsive.
